Writers block, oh no!
Everyone suffers this age old ailment at some point or another. They get an amazing plot idea, or a spectacular character and they go no where with it simply because they lack the muse to write. Often times characters and plots suffer because we writers fail to recognize or do not know how to cope with this temporary cancer!
I'm here to help ya'll out as I frequently suffer from this disease known as writers block (because I write short stories in my free time) I have a handful of tricks up my sleeves for you to take to the table when you're ready to play poker! Because its a luck of the draw how you get your muse back.
tip no. 1 poetry or prose? 99.99999% of the time we write in 'prose' format (story, paragraph etc.) However this is not the only format in which one can write! I love writing poetry so this helps me a lot, even if I dont use the poetry post I wrote!
Here's what you'll do.
1. Select a form of poetry you like.
examples: haiku, free verse, lymrix, lyric, abab, abba 2. Familiarize yourself with the basics.
does it need to rhyme?(fun!) Have a certain syllable count per line?(difficulty level 2) or maybe so many lines per stanza/ stanzas per peom. 3. Pick your thread location, setting and character. 4. Begin writing a poem and dont be afraid to be goofy!
my example, rhyming abab format Sunlight dazzled the striken yearling His eyes burned with soulles hunger His soul ached with endless yearning As in the shadows he lingered
one-wo, three-four His staccato two beat Gentle torrents of rain did pour As he moved in time complete
An angsty longing It burned his body His endless searching To find his, dearest Cody
His heart and soul, his dearst love She left without word, as a wild dove
It makes you think and its fun! No, its not easy but you'll enjoy it anyway!
tip no. 2 you hate poetry you say? Well, why didnt you say so before! How do you write? First, or third person? Just change it up. Write as though you are the character (first person) or write as though you are observung the character! Its not too hard, and it teaches you to know your own characters!
tip no. 3 write a whole post of description! You heard me. In full detail describe the area. Include the character, but write as though they were observing their surroundings!
tip no. 4 not to be used often! Try using a flash back of the characters past. Distant or recent. It'll jump start your muse engine! Trust me.
CAUTION writing flashbacks and dreams ARE a delicate artform. They are NOT to be taken lightly. Poorly written dreams/flashbacks can, comfuse ans turn off potential roleplay partners. There fore the best way to do this is in conjunction with tios no. 3 and 2. Be sure to demonstrate through text decoration the it IS a dream/flashback and be sure to write a present time paragraph or two of your character so that others can reply!
Dreams/flashbacks should NOT exceed 30% of your post. If they do edit them or add more 'cushion' from the present time! Too much flashback/dream is just as bad as too little AND poorly written ones.
Last but not least tip no. 5 music and art. These are very helpful. Listen to music, create art OR view artwork to inspire a post!
my example art
He moved as a phantom in,the desert land. Parched earth resembling his cracked, dry lips. He hungered for water, a deep suffered longing dragging him on. His movements were jerky, struggling to carry on. He tossed his graying crown into the sky, watching the unforgiving sun as it baked the landscape. He had been driven here, left for dead, and if he found no water dead was exactly where he'd be. His body spurred on by the fear of death broke into a trot, dragging his slowly withering form from the sullen trudge to a determined lope. He would not die. Not here. Not today.
Tada!
Tips! I hope these tips and my examples help you out! ♥ Caution !
