I've noticed that whenever we do Surprises/Disasters, they don't really affect the horses that much. Am I the only one that's noticed this? Like a disaster could be something along the lines of,"Wolves have come to MUSTANG, so watch out!" or something along those lines. Then when the staffers say that, you only get a few people that incorporate it into their threads.
In my bio class, we're learning and discussing the evolution of animals, natural selection, etc. To help us learn, our teacher did this lab/simulation/whatever you want to call it, about these birds called Geekfeezeles. Anyways, she'd had a "fate card" and it would say something like,"New predators have moved into the area, so the Geekfeezeles with brighter feathers will be hunted. Choose a chip from the bag. If the chip is yellow, your bird lives. If the chip is red, your bird dies." So what I was thinking of was maybe we could incorporate something like that into MUSTANG so that the surprise and disasters will have a greater influence on MUSTANG.
As an example, you could come up with a surprise like,"Flocks of birds have recently moved into MUSTANG this season, some showing signs of staying for long periods of time. These birds live near the ocean because they are attracted to blue things. So horses with blue eyes, keep your eye open. You may have some new company!" Meaning any horse with blue eyes could go to the store and use this "blue eyed pass" to purchase a free bird companion. Of course actually buying the bird would be optional and of course no one could create a blue-eyed horse after the surprise was announced and expect a free bird companion.
I think something like this would be cool and that it could boost activity as far as the surprises/disasters go. Still just a suggestion, though I wouldn't mind hearing some feedback.^_^

With the surprise/disaster coming up tomorrow, I'm glad you posted this today! I've been feeling the same, like the surprise/disaster always falls short. So you think that we should be a bit more specific, so that instead of general horses being affected, only a certain number of them will be? Of course, not everyone would get a surprise/disaster then, but the horses selected at random would change every month. ^^

On other sites that I've had things similar to this I have had a seperate "Chaos" or "Disaster" account that was able to like... go into other's posts and do something that they then had to react to. So like the wolves thing, the "Surprise" account could go into a thread and just post something simple like "The sound of wolves howling is heard in the distance, but it growing closer".
It would take some doing on the admins part, and people would have to react in some way, but I've always liked doing things like that to kind of... make people include the surprise/disaster. People would always be able to include it in their threads even if they didnt get tagged by "Surprise" though I'd think.

Ooh, I like that idea as well. We've done things like this in the past, but as you said, it takes a lot of dedication on the part of those playing the "Surprise" account. I wouldn't be against doing that again, though

In the past we have singled out a few specific characters to be affected by the surprise/disaster. The only problem is that sometimes this creates unhappy members, which is probably why we stopped doing it. People felt like they were being singled out, or they were upset that their character got singled out because it ruined plans, or they just generally hated being forced to participate. However, without choosing specific characters they just ceased to work, as we've all noticed. I'm not sure how we'd overcome this problem.
I do like the idea of having a specific account for the task. We did that for the wolves and wrangler, but this idea sounds a lot less intrusive. Instead of having the wolf attack, we'd simply hint that one was nearby, and then the players could work that into their thread however they pleased. Love it!
